GORP

GORP ("Good Old Raisins and Peanuts”) is a snack mix that provides the energy surge the body needs on a long day hike. Although there are as many versions of this snack as there are people who eat it, here are two of our favorites.

Sweet GORP

Yields 9 cups

  • 1 cup M&Ms
  • 2 cups cranberries, dried
  • 4 cups peanuts
  • 2 cups raisins

Combine all ingredients, mixing thoroughly. Store in an airtight container.

Salty GORP

Yields 10 cups

  • 4 cups rice crackers
  • 2 cups tamari almonds (see recipe below)
  • 4 cups sesame sticks

Combine all ingredients, mixing thoroughly. Store in an airtight container.

Tamari Almonds

  • 2 cups whole almonds
  • 1 teaspoon miso paste
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • ¼ cup tamari
  • 2 tablespoons sesame oil
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder

1) Toast almonds at 350 degrees for 5-7 minutes or until lightly toasted.

2) Combine remaining ingredients in large bowl.

3) Add almonds to tamari mixture and toss until well coated.

4) Reduce oven heat to 300 degrees and place almonds on a parchment lined baking sheet.

5) Cook for approximately 10 minutes turning almonds every 3-5 minutes.

6) Let cool completely and break apart clusters. Add to salty GORP mix.
